Counselling and Therapies
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitation Reprocessing EMDR is an acronym for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an innovative clinical treatment that has successfully helped over a million individuals who have survived trauma, including sexual abuse, domestic violence, combat, crime, and those suffering from a number of other complaints including depressions, addictions, phobias and a variety of self-esteem issues. EMDR is a complex method of psychotherapy that integrates many of the successful elements of a range of therapeutic approaches in combination with eye movements or other forms of rhythmical stimulation in ways that stimulate the brain’s information processing system. With EMDR therapy it is unnecessary to delve into decades-old psychological material, but rather, by activating the information-processing system of the brain, people can achieve their therapeutic goals at a rapid rate, with recognizable changes that don’t disappear over time.
Counselling Psychology
Counselling Psychology is the integration of psychological theory and research with therapeutic practice. The practice of Counselling Psychology requires a high level of self-awareness and competence in relating the skills and knowledge of personal and interpersonal dynamics to the therapeutic context.
Counselling & CBT
There are several types of counselling that follow similar lines to the various different types of psychotherapy. PRS Counsellors have extensive training and experience in the models listed below. Each model has its own theory of human development and its own way of working. They are all non-directive, except for gestalt and cognitive behavioral counselling CBT.
Psychodynamic Counseling
This is based on the idea that past experiences have a bearing on experiences and feelings in the present, and that important relationships, perhaps from early childhood, may be replayed with other people later in life. It translates the principles and insights of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy into once-a-week counselling. The new version of this model is CAT Cognitive Analytical Therapy, this where they joined CBT with an Analytical model.
Transactional analysis counseling
Transactional analysis counselling emphasis’s people’s personal responsibility for their feelings, thoughts and behavior. It believes people can change, if they actively decide to replace their usual patterns of behavior with new ones.
Client-centered or person-centered counseling
This is based on the principle that the counsellor provides three ‘core conditions’ (or essential attributes) that are, in themselves, therapeutic. The counsellor uses the relationship with the client as a means of healing and change.
Gestalt counseling
This is a directive type of counselling, focusing on gestalten (patterns of thought, feeling and activity). It encourages people to have an active awareness of their present situation, and also incorporates communication that goes beyond words. A key part of gestalt counselling is the dramatisation, or acting out, of important conflicts in a person’s life. This could involve using two or more chairs, for instance, so that they can physically take up different positions to represent different aspects of themselves.
Support Group
The PRS support group has been over subscribed and we have identified many other areas for group work as sub groups form naturally from its existence. The Support Group is for individuals who feel isolated or alone. The group has been most beneficial to users that have suffered a bereavement, come out of a controlling or abusive relationship and feel abandoned or alone.
Agrophobics, alcoholics and drug users who wish to network with individuals from other walks of life so as to establish healthy relationships. People suffering with depression but live alone and find it difficult to make friends. The group serves a whole array of presenting problems, the common denominator is “being alone”.
However, we have experienced service users with real Anger Management problems, Personality Disorders and individuals with specific mental health needs. Dovetailing into other groups or services is of paramount importance as the Multi Dimentional Model will allow Waiting Times to Reduce dramatically and allow us the automony to manage these referrals efficiently and enable us to refer the patient into a treatment plan at the right level, with the most suitable therapeutic interventions.
Personality Disorder Group
Group psychotherapy has become a more prevalent treatment option for our clients with borderline personality disorder. From our experience many patients accessing the support group have been diagnosed with a Personality Disorder and this has now emphasised a need to offer our own PD-Group within this package.
Anger Management Group
Anger Management is also an important Group facility we feel patients would benefit from. Various types of group approaches are available within PRS. Anger management commonly refers to a system of psychological therapeutic techniques and exercises by which someone with excessive or uncontrollable anger can control or reduce the triggers, degrees, and effects of an angered emotional state.
Multiple Personality Disorder MPD - Hearing Voices Group
Multiple personalities is a dissociative condition in which an individual’s personality is split into two or more distinct sub-personalities, each of which may become dominant at different times. People with multiple personality disorder suffer from internal chaos, roller-coaster emotions and terrible memories. Group support is beneficial for the patient when they are supported by other group members and to see progress with fusion of multiple identities.
Telephone Counselling
The idea that a therapist's physical presence is always essential to recovery is not entirely true. Some individuals are sometimes too embarrassed to go to a local practice, not motivated enough to make the trip. Have severe disabilities or agrophobia that prohibit them leaving the house. Transport problems or even babysitting difficulties, so receiving therapeutic support over a telephone is a tremendous advantage.
PRS Telephone Helpline
This is an “In hours”HELPLINE, that means there is someone to take the call. The line is open to all service users that have been referred into the service. PRS has trained many MIND workers in the past on ways to handle difficult calls, and there are so many helplines with only an answer phone available. PRS receives helpline calls on a regular basis. We aim to receive the call and manage the caller with the most appropriate care and support. Our highly trained staff offer instant relief to vulnerable or distressed individuals.
PRS therapeutic services are gender, as well as culturally-sensitive, and have evolved to meet each individuals' unique clinical complexion. Patient aim is established at the onset of assessment, whislt outcome is established by the patient completing their own evaluation of our service, offering patient feedback on any areas of the service they would like to change.
